The SLT (speech and language therapist) plays a vital role in the assessment and intervention of the special child. They carry out a number of child based assessments to see where the child’s speech is delayed and what level his communication is at. Programmes are set up by the SLT for the school and home so that the child is getting the same programme from everyone.
They concentrate on receptive and expressive language. Receptive language is what the child understands what they hear. Expressive language is what the child can say and verbalise.
