As a father to two boys, nine and ten years of age, who both have a diagnosis of ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), I decided to write a blog about our journey since their diagnosis. There are many hurdles and obstacles to overcome and it can be a nightmare sometimes to get the right information and to know what step to take next. We were given our diagnosis and a pamphlet and sent home!
My wife worked in the education sector so she was extremely well informed about autism and what to do and what to look for. I knew very little so I had to follow her lead about everything. It can be hard for parents in this situation to figure out who to talk to and get advice from on a condition that you might not have a clue about. Most people who have not encountered a child with autism seem to automatically default to thinking that autism is what that kid in the Sixth Sense movie had, which is an extreme case in fairness.
I hope this blog is helpful to parents who are maybe, facing a diagnosis and are at the beginning of their journey. Please check out the links above for more information.
